SCHOOLS FOR SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS

Once you finish the School of Spiritual Direction and have some experience under your belt, you may want to deepen and specialise your practice. We have two offerings, the School of Spiritual Exercises Accompaniment and the School of Supervision.

SCHOOL OF SPIRITUAL EXERCISES ACCOMPANIMENT

In the last several years there has been a renewed desire to experience the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. It’s our desire to train Ignatian directors to accompany these thirsty pilgrims. While offering direction to someone making the Ignatian Exercises is similar to offering regular direction, there are distinct differences. This training: lasts 16 months, will cover the skills necessary to accompany someone through the Ignatian Exercises, and will look at the distinctives of Ignatian Spirituality.

This school is designed for those who have a couple of years experience and have been accompanied by an Ignatian Director through the 19th Annotation of the Exercises.

SCHOOL OF SUPERVISION

Our supervision training is a guided, year-long cohort learning experience marked by solid instruction, rich discussions, and individual oversight. The cohort begins with an in-person Retreat and meets online throughout the year after this.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

SCHOOL OF SUPERVISION

  • Supervision entails the practice of reflecting contemplatively on one’s work as a spiritual director, noticing interior movements and the action of God in the context of a specific session. The supervisor is an experienced spiritual director specifically trained to assist in this contemplative and evocative process.

  • Spiritual directors are humans and, as such, are not detached observers. In companioning others on their journey with God, spiritual directors encounter painful stories and situations, a plethora of complex issues, intense emotions, unanswerable questions, moral dilemmas, triggered memories and more. They are deeply affected by what they hear – in helpful and unhelpful ways – and need a place to explore their inner movements and resulting responses in a safe, confidential space.
The bottom line: Supervision helps spiritual directors grow in self-awareness, self-understanding and interior freedom which leads to an expanded capacity to be present and attentive to those they come alongside. We also think it helps you grow as a human being in general.
Any spiritual director practicing “good and safe practice” will see a Supervisor, a minimum of quarterly. If you are reading this and you don’t have a supervisor, feel free to reach out to us. We can connect you with a directory of Supervisors we have trained.

  • At Sustainable Faith, our hands-on, cohort-style of learning has made us one of the leading trainers of spiritual directors. We bring the same time-tested, learn-by-doing stance to our Supervision training: Small class sizes, relevant reading, evocative learning, and an emphasis on group and individual practice in an environment of mutual support and personal instruction.

  • Minimum 2 years spiritual direction experience and a regular rhythm of receiving spiritual direction and supervision.

  • After the Introductory Meeting, Students will meet with their Teacher for a Consultation, locating them in their spiritual direction practice and identifying areas of growth for the upcoming year. In between modules, students “practice” on two to three spiritual directors, reviewing six of these sessions in one-on-one, Peer, and Group Supervision Experiences with a Supervisor. Students meet online between the opening and final modules, for 4-5 teaching and Supervision blocks. Students read 3 books over the course of the year and reflect on their reading and experience in written reflections and within group work.

  • Dates TBC:

Online one-to-one meetings begin in November

    In-person retreat in January

Online group modules after in-person retreat
